A section has been created for those who are just starting to learn the
Farsi language and wish information
on which books they should adopt to make quick progress and how to get
them.

THE
PROJECT
Nowadays, whoever
starts to learn the Farsi language, will soon face
the lack of efficient dictionaries that are necessary to quickly
achieve a satisfactory mastery of the language.
Barring the Grammatica del Neo-persiano by prof.
D'Erme, as good as it is old, and the Grammatica della Lingua
Persiana and the Dizionario Persiano-Italiano
by prof. Alessandro Coletti - certainly to be considered some of the
best tools for studying Farsi, nevertheless hard to find in bookshops -
we can truthfully assert that there are no other exhaustive textbooks
which are really useful for our goal.
Troubles come up while translating Italian into Farsi, for the
Italian-Farsi dictionaries currently available in only a few bookshops
in Italy are suffering from shameless gaps and a misleading
incompleteness.
These are not the tools we need to quickly improve our Farsi!
In 1994 a working team was formed to develop a well-constructed and
more detailed dictionary, with the intent to supply all Farsi lovers
with a more efficient study tool.
The Italian-Farsi dictionary which the team is working on is more
comprehensive and exhaustive than any other dictionary available:
for
headwords with more than a single
definition, example phrases will be provided (these will assist in
singling out the appropriate meaning while converting Italian to Farsi);
some Farsi words often carry diacritic marks for a correct
pronunciation;
a whole host of proper, geographic and historic terms have been added
that have not been previously available in other Italian-Farsi
dictionaries.
The project of creating the Newest Italian-Farsi Dictionary originated
in 1991: a student who attended courses in Farsi at La
Sapienza university in Rome decided to start to integrate new
headwords and several sample phrases into the only Italian-Farsi
dictionary available at that moment (and in only a few specialized
bookshops) with the intent to create a broader and more detailed
dictionary.
In 1993 that student decided to attend a triennial course in Persian
Language and Literature at the Italian Institute for Middle and Far
East (Is.M.E.O.), today known as Is.I.A.O. (Italian Institute for
Africa and East).
It was in 1994 that the student and his teacher of Persian language and
literature at that Institute agreed to combine their efforts, with the
help of a word processor that allowed the typing of phrases in Latin
and Arabic fonts within the same document, to create a superior
dictionary.
The team for the Newest Italian-Farsi Dictionary was born.
Today the team continues its efforts in everlasting memory of prof.
Kassaì who passed away in February 2003 in Rome. rU.h-a^s ^sAd!

THE
SOFTWARE
At the beginning, the
working team trusted an Eastern Languages
software called Al-Kaatib International. This
interesting word-processor wasn't free of bugs and nobody could
completely rely upon it, because of a software protection key that
didn't vouch for a constant use of the word-processor in the years to
come.
Later on, suggestions of use of "open-source" software were held in due
consideration¹.
Choice was made of a TeX macros package called ArabTeX².
ArabTeX provides for some transliteration rules according to which the
persian word day has to be written rUz,
to be is written bUdan,
and so on.
At compilation time, ArabTeX turns the latin letters word bUdan
into arabic letters as in the output shown in the examples
page.

THE
WORKING TEAM AND SUBDIVISION OF LABOUR
The working team
consists of undergraduates, teachers and mother
toungue interpreters. Each is entrusted with different tasks.
The project consists of three main stages:
1)
preparation of the Italian base files;
2) translation from Italian into Farsi;
3) translation check and final composition.
In stage 1 the Italian base file is prepared so to arrange work for
mother tongue team-mates for stage 2.
In this stage it is not necessary to know ArabTeX transliteration
rules, but knowledge of the meaning and functioning of all format
commands is required.
In stage 2 mother tongue translators insert the Persian translation of
the Italian headwords and example phrases.
Work in stage 2 requires no knowledge of the format commands, but
perfect mastery of Italian and Farsi languages and, of course, ArabTeX
transliteration rules have to be clear as well.
Stage 3 is prerogative of project coordinator's job.

HOW
TO OFFER YOUR COLLABORATION
How would you like to join our dynamic team and actively participate in
the creation of this unique dictionary and share your knowledge,
experience and ideas with the other team members?
Only keen and persevering Farsi mother tongue translators,
interpreters, teachers
and students perfectly mastering the italian
language can join the team.
Any collaboration is never binding and can be interrupted at any time.
Upon request, the project coordinator will arrange for the list of
phrases to be sent to him/her. Team members can choose the phrases they
wish to work on.
Translation has to be carried out strictly observing the
transliteration rules listed in the ALEF-BA2.PDF
file and according to the operating procedures shown in the MANUALE_COLLABORATORI.PDF
file.

We suggest that beginner should read some easy books at first, the same
as those used in Iranian primary schools. These books make it possible
to learn and memorize enough words and meanings to manage a family
conversation.
Once learned to read correctly, it'd be useful to have a look at some
newspapers articles, to become familiar with the everyday language.
Some disinterested advice: avoid wasting your time looking for the
